Windows Recover

The windows recover infection is pretty sneaky. It tells you that your system is damaged and that you need to repair it. This is like all the others. FAKE. It mimics Microsoft and other well known manufacturers and leads you to think your system is damaged. It can also hide your icons making you think everything is erased.

Super Glued Back Plastic with Cracked Screen

At first glance, I couldn’t tell that the black plastic back was super glued to the phone. After quite a while of prying and unsnapping, it finally gave. Lying under was residue of super glue. They super glued the back to the phone circuity. Still worked, I wonder how.

This is a second generation iphone with a cracked screen and bent up case. I am just replacing the screen.

After removing the screws and popping the back off, I finally got inside the phone. Removing the 2nd generation iphone screen is not as easy as the 3G or 3GS. Working on those models is a walk in the park compared to this one.

I have it disassembled and ready to put the new screen in tomorrow. We’ll see what happens when I try and join the screen assembly with the new scrse

Wii Stuck Disc Removal

There are other removal options out there, but I chose the one which I felt was the safest for the game and the unit. I disassembled the Wii. This was relatively easy compared to an xbox or PS3. However, you do need a special tool. I think I paid 8 dollars for it on ebay. It is a 3 point tip phillips style screw driver.

First remove all screws. Some will be located under the rubber feet.
Then remove the white fold down doors.
Remove the revealed screws from behind the doors.
This will allow you to remove the black plastic cover.
From there, continue to remove all screws.
Once removed, the Wii will separate.
Once separted, lightly pull the arm that comes down on top of the disc.
Next you will gently push down the front metal brackets which prevent the disc from being ejected. They act as gates which prevent another disc from being inserted while a disc is installed.
Be careful to keep the bottom of the disc up away from the metal brackets because they will scratch the disc.
While the Wii is opened, I recommend dusting it out wih a can of air. I noticed a build of of dust in the rear right area where the fan is at.
After I removed the disc, the Wii would accept a disc again, but it did get stuck sligtly before it pulled the dic in. I do not know the root cause to this. It may be the rubber wheel in front is dusty and not catching the disc anymore. However, I’m not sure of that because mine would eject the disc with no issues. So, I think the issue may be the white plastic arms that open and close as the disc is inserted. I could not find anything physically wrong. Good luck. I do not make any claims that this will work for you, but it did for me.

Mac Software Specific

Unlike Windows based operating system, Mac OS software is system dependent. This means you must have the original software that the system came with in order to reinstall the software. There are tricks to getting around this, but the easiest way is to have the original software.

Attempting to boot from a non-original software restore disk will result in a no boot. I found this multiple times by attempting to boot from software other than the original disks that shipped with the system.

Laptop Power Issues

These are usually pretty easy to find. There are only a couple of root cause issues that can be used by a power issue.

Identifying Laptop Power Issues:

  1. Check the out put voltage of the power adapter. The most reliable way to do this is to use a DMM or Digital  Voltmeter. It will need to have the DC voltage check selection. Depending on what type of adapter your system takes, you will have a center pin, or a hole with two contacts inside. Set the DMM to DC volts. Connect the black terminal to the outside silver lining of the electrical tip. Secondly put the red connection to the center pin, or inner contacts if no pin is present. HP laptop adapters give off around 18.5 volts while Dell give off 19.5. If you get these values, it is safe to say the adapter is functional.
  2. If you are able to measure the appropriate voltage from the connector, this does not mean that it is a good connection internal of the jack assembly. Try wiggling the
  3. Check the DC jack. This can be done by doing a visual inspection by looking directly at the DC jack plug in. If it appears undamaged, get a small screwdriver and lightly apply pressure side to side and see if it is loose. Most Dell laptops have a DC jack that is hard soldered onto the board. HP’s have a cabled DC jack, meaning it is not soldered to the board, but it runs as a cable and connects to the board at another connect point.

HP DV Family Laptops

Where to begin? Lets start at the beginning. The DV2. This is the earliest model that I can recall that we have repaired the video chip on. The point of this blog is to talk about our direct experience with the HP DV Family Entertainment laptop. These models have a bad heatsink design that causes the system to overheat. This results in a black screen on the laptop. The video chip is damaged.

At this point, you have 3 options.

1) Repair the system. This requires finding a repair company with a BGA (ball grid array) solder machine ($10,000 plus machine).

2) Buy and install a “new” or “refurbished” motherboard.

3) Get another laptop.

We choose option 1. We have located a repair company with the equipment necessary to replace the video chip. We find this to be the best solution for the customer. Rather than getting another motherboard which may fail in the future, we fix the issue at hand. Which, if done correctly,  should never fail again.
This type of repair covers the DV1000,  DV2000, DV6000, and DV9000. We have personally gotten the DV2000, 6000, and 9000 repaired.

If you have a DV family laptop and it has lasted this long, there is a good chance it will not have any issues. We do not recommend gaming or anything that will stress the graphics.

Dell Laptops Quality and Reliability

After working for a Dell Laptop Repair Company in Austin, TX, I became extremely fond of Dell Laptops. Now after owning my own computer repair shop for over 2 years, I can honestly say from a technician’s perspective, Dell laptops are the best laptops to work on.

People always ask me, ” What’s  the best computer?”   The answer is, there isn’t one.  Every computer is going to break, buy the one that’s cheapest to fix.  Not always true, but most of the time, Dell parts are cheap and there is an abundance of them.

I have customers who say they had a bad experience with their Dell Laptop or Desktop. They say, I would always get viruses and the windows wouldn’t load. What they don’t understand is that is the software side of things, Dell has nothing to do with that. It’s the Microsoft windows product, the antivirus software, or the websites you are visiting.

Bottom line, from my experience with laptop hardware issues, Dells are the easiest to work on.
